Copeland’s Industrial Single-Screw Ammonia Heat Pump Selected by Saputo to Achieve Sustainability Goals

Electrification of heating system expected to help reduce overall facility CO2 emissions by 40% annually

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 23, 2025) — Copeland, a global leader in sustainable climate solutions, announced today that Saputo, a global dairy leader, selected its Vilter VQ95 single-screw industrial heat pump to help meet its sustainability objectives. The move to Copeland’s ammonia-based system replaces Saputo’s existing fossil fuel boilers within its Abbotsford, British Columbia plant and is expected to deliver a major reduction in carbon emissions and energy usage.

Heat pumps globally have the potential to reduce global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by at least 500 million tonnes by 2030. Copeland is playing a critical role in driving this transition, partnering closely with customers to provide comprehensive support alongside its solutions, enabling faster time-to-market and helping to accelerate the widespread adoption of this transformative technology.

The Vilter VQ95 industrial heat pump, scheduled for commissioning at Saputo’s Abbotsford plant within six months, is projected to contribute to a 40% reduction in annual CO2 emissions. Designed to repurpose waste energy, the system will generate 1.5 megawatts of heating capacity, supporting Saputo’s ambitious sustainability initiatives.

Saputo partnered with Copeland for its advanced technology and comprehensive support. The collaboration highlights both companies’ dedication to enabling global progress toward a low-carbon future.

"Sustainability demands bold action and practical solutions," said Ryan Garrah, vice president, Canada, for Copeland. "The Vilter VQ95 heat pump demonstrates Copeland’s commitment to helping industries transition to a carbon-neutral future with technology that’s not only highly effective but also simple and reliable."

Designed to work with ammonia, a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-free natural refrigerant with zero global warming potential (GWP), the Vilter VQ95 heat pump is compact and adaptable, simplifying implementation and allowing end-users to more easily scale future operations. With a proven Vilter single-screw compressor at its heart, the VQ95 solution offers a high coefficient of performance (COP); three to five times more efficient than natural gas boilers.
